With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Mrs. Gwendolyn W. Jefferson, who transitioned on Wednesday night, January 19, 2022 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter.
She was the daughter of the late Walter Weaver, Sr and Gertrude Weaver, the widow of the late Honorable Mayor Clifton Jefferson, Sr. She was also preceded by her first husband, Frank Lowery.
She served faithfully in Warren Chapel United Methodist Church as a lay speaker, youth advisor, church school superintendent, administrative council chairperson, choir member and United Methodist Women. She embodied the true definition of United Methodism always aiming for all things to be in "decency and in order".
Mrs. Jefferson served on Lynchburg Town Council for four years. She was instrumental in establishing the 1st Annual Magnolia Festival and was available to advise and help further the progress of the town. She was also a member of the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women and Queen of Lynchburg #247 Order of Eastern Star.
From 1998 until her death she was the owner of Jefferson Funeral Home Service, Inc.
She is survived by her children, Karen Lowery, Clifton Lamont (Carla) Jefferson, Jr. and Letitia Jefferson, grandchildren, Camryn Jefferson and Mark Goble; stepchildren, Carolyn Drayton, Chrichinda Davis, Calvin (Rachel) Henry and Tina Green; nieces, Pearlie Weaver-Robinson and Selena Weaver; a grand nephew, Daryl Robinson, Jr. and a host of other family members and friends.
Public viewing is Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Funeral service is 12 noon Wed, Jan. 26, 2022 at New Haven United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sansbury Cemetery in Timmonsville, SC.
